In the first part of the pathway you will be immersed in a humanitarian response scenario. You will work as a programme manager for the response and go through the main steps of humanitarian programming. While taking these steps you will be prompted to use a ‘gender lens’ to explore the full impacts and consequences of your decision-making.
The learning journey then continues with the exploration of knowledge and practice that, as a humanitarian manager, you should be equipped with in order to prevent and respond to sexual and gender based violence.
Take this pathway to learn how to manage a response more effectively. There are gender-specific issues that affect people in an emergency and we all need to understand these properly. Doing so will enable you to take well-considered decisions and help you to avoid doing harm.
Length: approx 9 hours
The pathway is made up of two e-learning courses with some additional tools and resources to help you improve your effectiveness in humanitarian response. It will take you approximately two to three hours to go through the first course of the pathway, and six hours to complete the second on sexual and gender based violence. You can get a certificate of completion for each of the courses you complete but also for the whole pathway.
What will you learn?
At the end of the programme, you will:
- Have familiarised or re-familiarised yourself with how to apply a gender lens in all the phases of humanitarian programming, from gathering and assessing gender-related information in the early phases of a humanitarian response to planning gender-sensitive activities; from implementing gender-sensitive activities to monitor gender equality using checklists;
- Be able to explain the basic concepts associated with sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), including underlying causes and risk factors contributing to it, and its possible consequences;
- Have familiarised yourself with SGBV legal framework;
- Have explored actions for prevention of and response to SGBV.
Who is this pathway for?
This pathway targets humanitarian managers (and other staff with decision making and/or coordination roles) interested in refreshing or developing their knowledge and practice about:
1. Using a gender lens in humanitarian programming;
2. How to prevent and respond to sexual and gender based violence.
The e-learning modules have been shared by UNHCR and IASC. The other resources provided in this programme (PDFs or others) are available on line as open resources.
The procedures related to managing sexual and gender based violence may be specific to UNHCR, who shared the e-learning; they may therefore be different from the ones used in your organisation.
