The CNRS recruits permanent researchers through competitive examinations. Open to all fields of science each year in December, they are divided into sections or interdisciplinary commissions of the National Committee for Scientific Research.

Competitions are open to all nationalities, holders of a doctorate, PhD or other foreign degrees, titles or equivalent research (examined by a board of equivalency).
Timetable and competition process
- 4 December – 8 January: posting of positions and registration online on the researchers competitions site
- February to July: selection of candidates based on review of the application, followed by interview
- October 1st: appointment and first day on the job
