Summary of the role

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in a research project investigating the role of a protein phosphatase regulatory protein, PPP1R1A, in control of pancreatic beta cell function. The work will involve cell culture, molecular biology (including generation of variants by site-directed mutagnesis) biochemistry and immunocytochemistry.

You will have relevant experience of the above techniques and will also develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a PhD (or nearing completion) or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant field of study. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies and, in particular, will have experience in the study of protein phosphatase regulatory proteins. They must be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and contribute fully to team goals. Applicants will have an excellent training including, ideally, experience in techniques relevant to molecular and cell biology, immunohistochemistry and/or confocal microscopy.

Postdoctoral Research Associate / Postdoctoral Research Fellow

This EPSRC-funded post is available immediately for 18 months to support the work of Dr Halim Alwi

The EPSRC funded project will explore an exciting research of flight control for small multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The overall aims of the project are: (1) to help improve safety, resilience and survivability of small multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles in the event of in-flight faults and failures, and (2) to bridge the gap between theory and application of sliding mode control, thus encouraging adoption of sliding mode control in industry. In order to achieve these aims, the main objectives of the project are:

 

a)     to develop a simulation model and simulation tool for highly redundant multirotor UAV,

b)    to investigate and develop fault tolerant control (FTC) schemes based on sliding mode control, and

c)     to build the hardware of the multirotor UAV, and subsequently to implement, test and evaluate FTC control schemes.

 

The project will focus on the application of sliding mode methods to address the aims and objectives listed above. The successful applicants will help develop FTC schemes (objective (b)) and also be expected to assist in preparing the control schemes for hardware implementation on a multirotor UAV.

 

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

 

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.  At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in the state of the art fault tolerant control methods, or techniques which can be applied to these areas and be able to develop research programmes and methodologies. Knowledge of sliding mode control techniques would be an asset. An interest in aerospace systems especially multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles will also be an advantage. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

 

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role.  Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

College of Life and Environmental Sciences, Geography

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in the SHIFFT (Sustainable Heating: Implementation of Fossil-Free Technologies) project, funded under the EU INTERREG programme. The full-time post is available for 18 months from the 1st September, or as soon as possible afterwards. The post is based in Geography at the Streatham campus in Exeter, Devon. You will join the SHIFFT project team including the University of Exeter, Delft University of Technology and non-academic partners in the UK, Belgium and France. The project objective is to reduce CO2 emissions in the built environment by reducing the use of fossil fuels used for heating existing household and community buildings.

About the role

The post will involve producing state of the art guidance to inform the co-production of local sustainable energy systems, working collaboratively with non-academic partners to implement this guidance in a series of co-creation pilot projects, conducting fieldwork using appropriate research methods, as well as contributing to other project tasks. The successful applicant will be able to develop new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding, work collaboratively with local stakeholders, undertake research of high methodological rigour, write up findings in high quality journal publications as well as non-technical reports, and generate impact on policy and practice.

About you

The successful applicant will possess a PhD (awarded or nearing completion) or equivalent qualification/experience in Human Geography, Environmental Psychology, Science and Technology Studies or other relevant social science and be able to work independently in fieldwork contexts. An essential attribute will be the ablity to work collaboratively across the project team and to co-produce research with local stakeholders.

The post

The College wishes to recruit a Research Fellow with experience in computational modelling for decision making. Suitable disciplinary backgrounds include computer sciences, mathematics, quantitative economics or natural sciences. This is a 17 month post starting on 1at October 2019.

The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Professor Brett Day from the LEEP Institute in the Department of Economics and Professor Richard Everson from the Department of Computer Sciences and will join a vibrant interdisciplinary team of researchers working on the boundary between computer sciences, economics, natural sciences and policy.

This research position will examine decision-making problems relating to uses of land across the UK; in particular, how to decide which areas should be used for agriculture, which for forestry which for nature etc. when we are uncertain over the costs and benefits of each land use in each location. Working with an existing suite of computer models, the successful candidate will be involved in the quantification of uncertainty in those models and in developing solution methods that use those models to identify potentially optimal patterns of land use. Accordingly, experience in uncertainty quantification, model emulation and optimisation under uncertainty will be especially relevant.

The post is associated with two research programmes. The first is the ADVANCES project funded under NERC’s Landscapes Decision Programme. The second is a DEFRA project examining the environmental and economic consequences of different agri-environment policy designs. Accordingly, the post will sit on the boundary between cutting-edge research and real-world policy application.

Job description

We seek an ambitious and exceptional colleague with teaching experience in Circular Economy to join the Science, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (SITE) department at the University of Exeter Business School. The Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position will cover Education and Scholarship.

In particular, we welcome applications from Circular Economy scholars interested in one or more of the following research areas: consumer data, sustainable consumption and design, individual and company behaviors regarding commercial opportunities and value creation activities within the Circular Economy. Candidates should have a good understanding of mixed methods approaches to data collection.

We look for candidates that have the necessary skills to assist in the development of an online programme in circular economy.

About you

For a Lecturer post you will have:

A PhD or equivalent in Business/Management or related areas.
Experience developing taught programmes in Circular Economy at Undergraduate and PGT levels. Notably designing modules, specifying assessments and working with the quality assurance and programme accreditation process.
Experience overseeing taught programmes in Circular Economy, including oversight of day-to-day operational processes (e.g. timetabling, assessment, examination systems), and programme accreditation processes

Postdoctoral Research Associate

This full time post is available immediately on a 16 month basis to work on the EPSRC Grant ADAPT.

 

Summary of the role/position

The grant is developing new multiscale methods for composite manufacturing processes. The position will continue the development of a novel high order finite element model based on finite deformation Cosserat theory. The position will have opportunities to work with industry with GKN Aerospace and also at the Alan Turing Insitute.

 

At this stage of the proposal we are particularly interested in exploring the use of novel machine learning methods to accelerate expensive computations. The role will require a mixed mathematical background, including scientific computing, numerical methods and awareness of engineering problems and Machine learning approaches.

 

The project is flexible to consider applications from researchers looking for flexible working arrangements, including part time research roles.

Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow

This full-time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis for up to 24 months to support the work of Professor Frank Vollmer.

 

You will apply a novel optical single-molecule technique that has been developed in Prof Vollmer’s Laboratory to study molecular biophysics. The label-free single molecule technique will allow you to visualise the dynamics of enzymes, measure their energy landscapes, and apply pico to femto-Newton forces to control chemical reactions. These fundamental single-molecule studies will lead into the development of various applications for ultra-sensitive biomedical diagnostics.

 

This work is part of the UKRI Molecular Mechanics Initiative at the University of Exeter.  The UKRI funded Molecular Mechanics Initiative is a cutting-edge research programme that aims to achieve breakthroughs in how we detect, analyse, and manipulate molecules at the ultimate single-molecule level. The programme will develop a novel laser sensing and molecular mechanics analysis and manipulation capabilities. These capabilities will be at the forefront of developments showing that the technique holds the key to the next generation of enabling analytical and healthcare technologies on sensor chips. Our approach will unravel nature’s design principles for nanomachines, and will allow us to realise synthetic biomolecular machinery and designer enzymes in the longer term.  Measurements of energy landscapes combined with visualisation of enzyme movements will allow us to develop more accurate models for molecular machines.

 

What we are looking for…

You are a biophysicist with extensive experience in molecular biophysics and the application of a single-molecule technique such as FRET or optical tweezers. You have worked with biomolecules such as proteins. You are able to analyse single-molecule data quantitatively and apply biophysical models and theories. Experience with building single-molecule setups or optical instrumentation is desirable.

 

You are excited about working as part of a multi-disciplinary team composed of physicists, engineers, and biologists. You will work at the newly established Living Systems Institute, University of Exeter which provides state-of-the-art research facilities for realising one of the first optical approaches to study the energetics and dynamics of biomolecular machines:

Requirements for the role

Extensive experience with molecular biophysics and the application of a single molecule technique such as FRET or optical tweezers or nanopores. Familiarity with building a single molecule instrument is desirable.

 

Duties are to undertake research and fulfil other main duties and accountabilities associated with the position.  You will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

 

Applicants will:

–        Possess a PhD (or be nearing completion) in Biophysics, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Engineering or a related discipline

–        Be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes

–        Be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required

–        AQT PDRF, be a nationally recognised authority in molecular biochemistry or single-molecule studies and will be able to develop research programmes and methodologies

 

Appointed will be at Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow (Grade E or F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. You should demonstrate your achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying Job Description and Person Specification, which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
