Multiple Scholarships for International Postgraduate Students at the University of Sydney, Australia

The Scholarships listed below have funded the study of international students at the University of Sydney in the past. However, this is not a list of every scholarship that may be available throughout the world. 
Students are encouraged to look for funding from any source available to them. For example, you may be able to find further scholarship information from companies, universities in your home country, the Australian mission in your home country, by searching the internet, etc.

Anne Wexler Australian-American Public Policy Scholarships

The Anne Wexler Australian-American Public Policy Scholarship, supported by the Australian Government, provides an opportunity for Australian and American postgraduate students with strong academic credentials and leadership potential to undertake a Master’s degree in the field of public policy for up to two years.

Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP)

The Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan. It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to undertake postgraduate studies in development-related fields. Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Places on this program will next be available in Semester 1, 2019.

Approved Fields of Study at The University of Sydney

Eligibility for the ADB Scholarship
Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • be a citizen of the Asia Development Bank’s developing member countries
  • have gained an unconditional offer for one of the approved postgrad courses listed above
  • have at least two years full-time professional work experience (acquired after a university degree) at the time of application
  • be aged 35 years or under at the time of application
  • not have already completed a master degree
  • not previously studies overseas
  • be living and working in your home country

How to Apply
To be considered for this scholarship, you MUST:

  • Lodge an application for admission to one of the above degrees direct to the University, using the ‘apply now’ option within Find a course to take you to the Sydney Student portal where you apply and upload supporting documents.
  • Complete the ADB-JSP Information Sheet and upload it to your application. Use filename “ADB Scholarship Application Sheet’ and upload it as evidence of the scholarship you have applied for.
  • Complete the Income Conversion to US Dollars form and upload to your application in the general documents area.
  • The University of Sydney application processing fee (APF) will be waived if you choose ‘I have applied for a scholarship’, and ‘submit and request fee waiver’ when submitting your course application.
  • Your ADB-JSP application will only be considered, if you receive an unconditional offer to one of the above degree programs prior to the ADB-JSP application deadline. If your entry is conditional on English language proficiency or academic documentation, you must provide all required documents before the ADB-JSP scholarship deadline.
  • Upload evidence of two (2) years work experience (your CV) and your latest income tax return (an official letter from an employer may be accepted in cases where an income tax return is not available).

Next Commencement Period:

The next intake will take place in Semester 1, 2019. Applications for the Semester 1, 2019 intake close on November 1, 2018.

All students with an unconditional offer for Semester 1, 2019 and a completed ADB application form uploaded to their application by November 1, 2018 will automatically be considered for the Scholarship.

Successful applicants will be notified within two weeks of the cut-off date. Only successful students will be notified via email. Please do not contact the University regarding outcomes.

No applicant will be allowed to apply for the ADB-JSP scholarship more than three times. Previously unsuccessful applicants must wait one year before re-applying.

Selection Criteria
The University will nominate eligible students to the ADB on the basis of following criteria:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding academic achievement. The current GPA average required to be considered is 3.5/4.0 (6.5/7.0 or equivalent). The University of Sydney will calculate a grade conversion for other scales.
  • Preference will be given to female candidates.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a lower financial capacity.
  • Applicants with less than two years of work experience will not be selected.

Outcome
The Asian Development Bank allocates a limited number of scholarships each year to each participating university. Competition for an ADB-JSP scholarship is extremely strong. Only successful students will be notified via email.

Successful scholarship recipients will be eligible for a University of Sydney application fee refund if they remain enrolled after the first census date.

Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS)

AAS are funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as part of Australia’s foreign aid program. The AAS provide opportunities for people from selected developing countries to study in Australia. These Scholarships are awarded either on merit or on nomination by home governments. Information and application forms for the AAS must be obtained directly from the Australian Diplomatic Mission or the Australian Education Centre in your home country. Application process may take up to one year.

Successful scholarship recipients will be eligible for a University of Sydney application fee refund if they remain enrolled after the first census date.

Australia Awards Leadership Program (AALP)

The Australia Awards Leadership Program is supplementary to the Australia Awards Scholarship. It is offered to those who are identified as current and future leaders in their country and professional area. The Leadership Program offers leadership learning and development opportunities for awardees while they are in Australia undertaking postgraduate study. It is designed to motivate and inspire future leaders, develop individual leadership capabilities, and build enduring linkages and partnerships between developing countries and Australia.

Becas Chile

The Chilean Government (Ministry of Education) offers scholarships to Chilean students through the Becas Chile program. Scholarships are available for Masters, PhD, Postdoctoral research, short-term research, teacher training and technical programs. Becas Chile is administered by the National Commission for Scientific Research and Technology (CONICYT).

Brazilian Government Scholarship Program ‘Science without Borders’

Brazilian applicants can apply for scholarships for studies in priority areas through the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de N’vel Superior (CAPES) and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient’fico e Tecnológico (CNPq) to undertake studies at the University of Sydney.

Business Leader Postgraduate Scholarship

The University of Sydney Business School is offering up to twenty scholarships annually for local and international students undertaking one of the eligible single masters postgraduate coursework programs offered. The Scholarships are awarded on merit to the most outstanding applicants against the following selection criteria of academic achievement, leadership capabilities, ambassadorial potential and motivation to succeed in business in a socially responsible way.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Any Commonwealth country that wishes to do so may institute awards under this plan; however not every country participates and others review their participation on an annual basis. Countries who have participated in the recent past include Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. To be considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be nominated by the Scholarship Agency in your country of permanent residence.

Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR) Grant Program

CAAR is looking for projects that enhance Australia’s economic, cultural and social relations with the Arab region (comprising the 22 countries and territories of the Arab League). CAAR supports innovative projects that have clear outcomes and seeks to ensure the benefits of such activities are spread as widely as possible. The Council has a special focus on assisting the initiation of activities that are likely to prove self-sustaining.

Dr Abdul Kalam International Scholarships

The Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies at the University of Sydney offers the Dr Abdul Kalam International Postgraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships. The 11th President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is a distinguished scientist and aeronautical engineer by training who was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Sydney in May 2011. The Dr Abdul Kalam International Scholarships celebrate his commitment to education, and his endeavours to support outstanding students to develop as future leaders.

Endeavour Awards Program

The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to undertake study, research and professional development abroad.

Successful scholarship recipients will be eligible for a University of Sydney application fee refund if they remain enrolled after the first census date.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences International Postgraduate Coursework Scholarships

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will offer a limited number of competitive tuition scholarships to outstanding international students undertaking a postgraduate masters by coursework program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The Faculty of Science offers a limited number of The Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarships. These are full-time postgraduate research scholarships for outstanding international students wishing to undertake a research doctorate degree in the Faculty. These Scholarships are awarded to international students currently enrolled in at least a four year Bachelors Degree in Science which includes an independent research project.

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright program was created by the US Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through education and cultural exchanges. Grants are available for one year to postgraduate American students who require supervised field work or who need to use Australian research facilities to earn credit towards their US degrees. Students who have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship may have their tuition fee reduced or exempt (with the relevant faculty’s discretion) while studying at the University of Sydney.

Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship and Stipend Scholarship (International – formerly IPRS)

The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship scheme is funded by the Australian Government and provides tuition fees to top quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree at Australian universities. This scheme replaces the International Postgraduate Research Scheme. The RTP Fee Offset and Stipend Scholarship is very competitive and awarded to approximately 30 students each year. Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the RTP Fee Scholarship, the University of Sydney awards an RTP Stipend Scholarship to all International RTP Fee Scholarship recipients. This provides a stipend/living allowance.

Those under consideration for an RTP Fee Scholarship will automatically be considered for a University of Sydney International Scholarship, which also covers tuition fees and provides a stipend. Neither of these awards requires a separate application.Eligibility for the scholarship is based on a student’s course application.

Michael H. Rathgeber Scholarship (for residence at International House)

The Scholarship was established in 1971 by a gift from Dr and Mrs Henri Rathgeber, in memory of their son, Michael, who lived in the International House from its inception until his death in Japan in 1969. This Scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor of The University of Sydney on the advice of an IH Selection Committee. The Scholarship is awarded to any undergraduate or post graduate of the University of Sydney who has a good academic record or prospects or with special abilities, who would benefit from residence in International House and contribute to its purpose, but who would not be able to live in International House without financial assistance.

Nancy Roma Paech Postgraduate Scholarships

The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment offers a limited number of Nancy Roma Paech Postgraduate Scholarships. A full-time postgraduate scholarship to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Agriculture, is available for a suitably qualified candidate with an interest in the disciplines pertaining to agricultural science.

Northcote Graduate Scholarships

The Northcote Graduate Scholarships enable students resident in the United Kingdom to undertake a higher degree at an Australian university for up to three years in any field of study. The Scholarship covers return economy airfares, university fees, and a living allowance.

Peruvian Scholarships

The Peruvian National Council of Science, Technology and Innovation (CONCYTEC) has launched an international PhD scholarships program, targeting Peruvian researchers seeking to undertake PhD programs in science or engineering related disciplines, at top ranking universities around the world.

Rotary International

Rotary International administers academic-year, multi-year and cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships. Contact your local Rotary club to find out which scholarships your district is sponsoring, inquire about local application deadlines, and to obtain application materials.

Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness Scholarship

All sport, whether at the elite or interfaculty level, is managed by the professional staff at Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF). They are assisted by a team of specialist coaches, administrators and associated volunteers. The University of Sydney Sport Foundation was established in 2005 and is dedicated to ensuring the on-going viability and sustainability of sport and sporting success at the University. Extensive funding is required to provide the necessary infrastructure, coaching and administrative expertise, as well as the Sporting Scholarship Program for elite athletes.

To be eligible for a SUSF scholarship, two main criteria (amongst others) apply:

  • Scholarship holders must be currently enrolled and actively studying at a recognised tertiary education institution (preferably The University of Sydney); and
  • Scholarship holders must represent/compete for their relevant Sydney University sports club, where possible.

Talentia Scholarships for Spanish or European Union Member State Nationals

Talentia Scholarships offer tuition fees and other financial assistance to Spanish nationals or nationals of a European Union Member State with a residential, educational or employment connection to the state of Andalusia, to undertake postgraduate programs at selected prestigious universities including the University of Sydney.

Thai Government

The Thai Government offers Thai students the opportunity to apply for a Thai Government Scholarship. The Scholarships are normally available for students in their last year of their bachelor degree or who are currently studying a masters or a PhD. The closing date for the applications is normally 31 July each year.

University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)

The University of Sydney invites candidates who are eligible to undertake a Postgraduate Research Degree or Master’s by Research program at this University to apply for the University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS).

The objective of the USydIS is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to undertake research projects which will enhance the University’s research activities. The USydIS is open to all research disciplines; however participation in the USydIS program Research Period 2 and Research Period 3 are at the discretion of the Dean of each faculty. These Scholarships will be awarded in conjunction with the International RTP Fee Scholarship (formerly IPRS) for commencement in Research Period 2 (March), and in early April for commencement in Research Period 3 (July). The USydIS will cover tuition fees and living allowance for up to three years with a possibility of one semester’s extension for PhD students. The eligibility criteria for USydIS is the same as the RTP Fee Scholarship.

The USydIS is available to students commencing in both the March (Research Period 2) and July (Research Period 3). We welcome scholarship applications through out the year. Please note that it may take up to four months from submission of your application to receiving advice on whether you have been successful. There is no separate scholarship application form, to be considered for the scholarship you must submit an application for admission to your research degree.

To be considered for an University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS), a student must:

  • Read the selection process and Research Experience guide
  • Download and complete the Research Experience Evidence Template according to the guidelines in the Research Experience Guide
    Prepare an application for admission to your degree (see guidelines)
  • Go to Sydney Courses and look up the research degree you applying for. Complete an application for admission for a research degree (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy).
  • In the application form for admission, when prompted, ensure you tick the relevant section on the admission form “Do you wish to be considered for an Research Training Program Fee Scholarship or University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)?”
  • Upload all other required supporting and Faculty specific documentation for application for admission.
  • Submit your completed application form.

* Please note: you MUST submit all required supporting and faculty specific documentation before your application is considered to be complete. For scholarship selection purposes, applicants must also submit Research Experience Evidence information. Please refer to the two documents under information for the RTP Fee Scholarship (International).

Vice-Chancellor International Scholarships Scheme

Background: The Vice Chancellor’s International Scholarships are awarded to exceptional international students based on academic merit. The Scholarship is open to all commencing international students enrolling in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree and all applicants are automatically considered.
Open to: Open to all international students who have an unconditional offer of admission for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at the University of Sydney by the deadline set in section “Scholarship Offer Details” below.
The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit as assessed from a student’s application for admission to an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree.
Value and Duration: Four scholarship amounts may be offered

  1. $40,000 payable for one year in two equal instalments
  2. $20,000 payable for one year in two equal instalments
  3. $10,000 payable for one semester
  4. $5,000 payable for one semester
Application: All eligible students with an unconditional offer by the round closing dates listed below will be considered.

There is no separate application for this scholarship, all eligible students will automatically be considered.
Scholarship Offer Details: To qualify, secure an Unconditional Offer of Admission before the following dates:

SEMESTER TWO 2018

  • Round 1 – 06 April 2018
  • Round 2 – 04 May 2018
  • Round 3 – 08 June 2018

SEMESTER ONE 2019

  • Round 1 – 05 October 2018
  • Round 2 – 07 December 2018
  • Round 3 – 18 January 2019

Walter Mersh Strong Scholarship for Papua New Guinea

Dr W.M. Strong of Port Moresby, by his will in 1946, bequeathed his residuary estate amounting to £35,000 to the University of Sydney for the purpose of encouraging education and research in subjects relevant to the particular needs of the then territory of Papua. In Semester 1, 2014, one Walter Mersh Strong Scholarship is available to an academically meritorious postgraduate international student from Papua New Guinea, to undertake one of the following courses: Master of Agriculture, Master of Public Health, Master of International Public Health, Master of Education or Master of Social Work. The Scholarship recipient is invited to enjoy the Sydney experience at one of the finest institutions of higher education in the world. Only citizens from Papua New Guinea can apply.

Wigram Allen Scholarships for the Juris Doctor – International

Originally founded by gifts in 1867 and 1883 from Sir George Wigram Allen for the encouragement of the study of law, the Wigram Allen Scholarships now provide commencing scholarships for the Juris Doctor program, including a scholarship awarded to international students based on academic merit.
