The Department of Operations Management at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) invites applications for vacant PhD scholarships within the areas of the Department. Starting dates are expected to be in the autumn 2019.

The research areas of the Department covers and integrates five academic research areas: Supply Chain Management (design and management of flows of goods, services, knowledge and information between firms); Management Accounting (design, use and effects of financial and non-financial measures in strategy development and implementation); Innovation Management (deployment of management tools and mechanisms to connect technology, organization and markets); Operations Management (relation between production, organization and strategy in manufacturing and service industries); Managerial Economics (decision modelling around pricing, costing, production planning and forecasting).

This allows cross-disciplinary exchange of research ideas and helps fostering of a strong intellectual environment. The Department understands management in relation to managerial tools and instruments that help to frame and make business issues visible and making them amenable to intervention, development and control.
The Department wishes to develop research and teaching in close connection with practice. Candidates who are able to add to the general fields of Management Accounting, Managerial Economics, Operations Management and Supply Chain Management and work among two or more of the areas will have an advantage. Competency and skill from empirical research by any method is an advantage as is the ability to bridge to other of the Department´s research areas.
The Department of Operations Management supplies teaching and supervision to undergraduate, graduate, masters, executive and PhD programmes in economics and business administration. Currently, the Department hosts four broad research programs:
- Servitization
- Circular Economy
- Pricing and Management Accounting
- Maritime Business Studies
We encourage candidates to apply by submitting interdisciplinary PhD proposals that link to, or ideally combine, different research areas of the Department. Strong competencies and skills in empirical research (either qualitative or quantitative) are an advantage.
The Department invites applications for several vacant PhD scholarships. For these scholarships, we are looking for applicants who will be interested in and qualified to undertake research in one of the following research areas:
- Scholarships are available as part of a research project titled “The Supply Chain of the 21st Century: Towards Ethical, Social and Circular Business Models”, which is co-financed by CBS and the Nordakademie Foundation, Germany. General information
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours) in total. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month DKK 23.770 (app. EUR 3,160) up to DKK 28.964 (app. EUR 3,860) depending on experience, plus a pension contribution totalling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.
The salary level and appointment is determined by the Danish Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.

To be considered, the candidate should have a basic training at the master’s level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process). An educational background in the social sciences (e.g. business administration) is necessary. The applicant must have successfully completed the master’s degree before commencing PhD at CBS. The applicant must be fluent in English.
The application (see link below) must include a 5 page project description within a relevant area. This research proposal should contain a presentation of an original research question and a description of the initial theoretical framework and methodology and how the project is contributing to the existing literature and hence include a short review of the state of the art within the literature. The project description should also include a presentation of the suggested empirical material as well as a work-plan.
In addition to the research proposal, the application must include copies of a master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, a brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. master’s thesis).
Recruitment procedure
The Recruitment Committee expects to shortlist at least two to five applicants to be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.
Applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.
Once the recruitment process is completed, each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
