The SimCenter is a collaborative Center on Modeling and Simulation involving the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; University of Washington and the University of Notre Dame. The center is funded by the NSF as a NHERI Research Center to provide next-generation computational modeling and simulation software tools, user support, and educational materials to the natural hazards engineering research community with the goal of advancing the nation’s capability to simulate the impact of natural hazards on structures, lifelines, and communities. The position will be housed at the University of Notre Dame where the focus is on developing computational procedures and workflows for assessing the effect of wind, waves and tsunami on structures.
A successful candidate for this position will have a history of problem solving, and acquiring new skills to meet a wide range of research and software development challenges. Such a candidate should have a broad knowledge of object-oriented software-engineering techniques (i.e. c++, python) and a familiarity with software collaboration technologies (i.e. git, issue tracking). Our software is released for Windows, Mac and Linux, so a general familiarity with each of these platforms is preferred. Experience in UI development, preferably using Qt, is also needed. Familiarity with some of the tools of CFDwould also be helpful.
The SimCenter employs a wide variety of technologies. Demonstrated familiarity with at least some of these tools would be helpful: Main programming languages C++ (as employed in Qt) and python; the JSON data format. Git and Github for code management; Cluster computing with a UGE grid, such as TACC’s stampede 2; the basics of CFD simulation, as enacted by OpenFOAM; the basics of HTTP requests; a TACC-developed framework called Agave.
