CIM is looking for a Social Scientist or Economist (PhD) to be based at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Cairo / Egypt.

We are looking for you:
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) requires your expertise to develop innovative measures for integrating women and young people into the labour market in rural areas. Founded in 1975, the institute is part of the CGIAR worldwide partnership engaged in agricultural research for development. With its policy research and advisory services in the field of food and nutrition security, IFPRI makes a key contribution to applied research for development. In Egypt, IFPRI works closely with research institutes and political decision-makers to develop solutions for tackling high youth unemployment. Job creation, particularly in rural areas, is a high priority for the government and is viewed as an important element in underpinning social peace.

Your tasks will involve:

  • Research on how to better integrate young people and women into rural labour markets notably  agriculture and agribusiness
  • Assisting Egyptian Government staff in analysing state labour market policy in terms of tackling unemployment among young people and women in rural areas
  • Establishing partnerships with public and civil society organisations
  • Developing and implementing a communication strategy to promote and raise awareness of labour market policy

Your profile:

  • A PhD in social, economic or agricultural sciences, or in another field relevant to the role
  • Several years’ experience in researching socio-economic issues, ideally in a relevant subject area
  • Proven publication activities
  • Very sound knowledge of current econometric methods and STATA statistical software
  • Experience of policy advisory services would be ideal
  • Business fluency in English
  • In addition you have the citizenship of an EU member state
