Postdoctoral Research Fellowship – WZB Berlin Social Science Center

The Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung gGmbH (WZB Berlin Social Science Center) is offering one 3-year position of a postdoctoral research fellow starting preferably on December 1, 2018, for the EU-Horizon 2020 Project “Technological inequality – Understanding the relation between recent technological innovations and social inequalities (TECHNEQUALITY)”. The WZB is a publicly financed international social science institution that conducts basic research that is theory-based and problem-oriented (see: The position will be attached to the research department “Skill Formation and Labor Markets” (Director: Professor Heike Solga).

The aim of the TECHNEQUALITY project is to push beyond the current research frontiers by focusing on the broader societal impact of technological developments. The interdisciplinary TECHNEQUALITY consortium brings together sociologists and economists from several European universities and research institutes (Oxford, Stockholm, Florence, Tallinn, Maastricht, Tilburg, and Berlin). Within the consortium, the WZB leads the work package “Educating today for tomorrow’s labour market” (local PIs: Heike Solga, Reinhard Pollak, and Martin Ehlert) – mainly working together with Maastricht (ROA), Florence (EUI), and Tallinn University. This work package zooms in on education systems’ capacities to provide appropriate opportunities for individuals’ early and continuous skills acquisition, the interplay between education systems and technological changes, as well as different types of inequalities in new skill acquisition. Specifically, it focusses on empirically examining the match between educational biographies and skills and the impact that education systems, families, and workplaces as learning opportunities have on this relationship. Analyses of these different aspects of skill acquisition, enhancement and utilization in times of accelerated technological change will also address inequality by gender, family context, and ethnic groups. The analyses will make use of longitudinal and comparative data sources such as NEPS or PIAAC.

The research fellow is supported by a research assistant. The WZB and the research department provide various forms of supporting the career development of young researchers, including the coordination of work/family obligations or the possibility to teach courses at universities in Berlin or elsewhere. The WZB was the first German institution to receive the “HR Excellence in Research Award” from the European Commission in June 2013.


  • Ph.D. degree with excellent results (obtained or submitted) in sociology or a relevant field in Social Sciences
  • Outstanding knowledge of quantitative research methods, especially in longitudinal data analyses (experiences in comparative research or multilevel data analysis are welcome but not required)
  • Excellent knowledge in labor market or education research
  • Articles in recognized peer-reviewed journals, either published or, in case of a very recently completed Ph.D., submitted
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of German is welcome but not required

Salary: E14 on the Wage Agreement for Public Service (TVöD) scale.
