The Council has a volunteer internship available in the Studies Department. The volunteer intern will report to the Ira A. Lipman Chair in Emerging Technologies and National Security and Director of the Digital and Cyberspace Policy Program and will help to organize and run the daily activities of the office and participate in research as needed.

The Foreign Affairs Publishing Department has a strong focus on marketing the magazine to educators, students, foreign policy associations and other non-profit organizations. Foreign Affairs produces academic resources such as Foreign Affairs Books and Custom Textbooks. These titles are used by professors in International Relations, Foreign Policy, and International Political Economy from universities and colleges in the U.S. and Canada. The internship offers an exciting opportunity to learn about marketing, outreach, and academic publishing at the preeminent journal of international affairs.

CFR’s volunteer internships give selected volunteer interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning. The Corporate Program, the Council’s primary point of contact with the private sector, enlists the business community’s participation in and support of the Council’s activities. Corporate members include over 200 U.S. and non-U.S. firms representing a wide range of business sectors, including financial services, law, manufacturing, consulting, technology, media, and others. Each year the program hosts over 70 events in New York and Washington, including a two-day conference. By providing support for the Corporate Program, the volunteer intern will gain exposure to leading global companies and economic and political issues affecting international business while building important business skills.

Current projects address the causes and effects of widespread phenomena such as democratization, globalization, migration, and economic development on domestic politics, foreign relations, and transnational ties within the Western Hemisphere.

Volunteer Internship, Library and Research Services, Summer 2018

CFR’s volunteer internships give selected volunteer interns the opportunity to receive training in the area of foreign policy; as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning. The Council on Foreign Relations has a volunteer internship available in the Library and Research Services Department. The library is undertaking two large digitization projects of archival photos and videos. The volunteer intern will work together with the library staff to conduct quality control for the Digital Asset Management system and combine resources into metadata files. This internship will provide the opportunity to learn about digital asset management and metadata creation, as well as to participate in departmental meetings, shadow supervisors and other team members, and attend project meetings. The intern will gain hands-on experience working on a digitization project that features engaging foreign policy content, receive professional development training offered to all CFR interns, and have the option to attend professional networking events with CFR librarians.

With more than one-third of its members based outside of New York and Washington, DC, the goal of the National Program and Outreach is to energize foreign policy discussions nationwide. The National Program supports and connects CFR members across the country. In the nation’s capital, the Council’s Washington Meetings Program provides a nonpartisan forum for informed foreign policy debate by bringing CFR members together with policymakers, world leaders, academic experts, and prominent thinkers to discuss a wide range of international issues. The Meetings intern provides valuable support for the department in all aspects of meeting programming. The intern would develop professionally while working in a dynamic team-oriented environment.  He or she would gain experience assisting in the coordination of events, improve familiarity with a wide range of foreign policy topics and experts, and have the opportunity to observe high-level dialogue on contemporary foreign policy issues.
