Summer School for Women in Mathematics and Statistics

The summer school is intended for women students studying in first year B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent degree and having Mathematics as one of the major subjects/courses, during the academic year 2017-2018. Over a period of two weeks, the school shall aim at helping young students gain broader exposure to problem solving skills in mathematics and statistics at the undergraduate level.

Specific topics that will be covered are: Mathematical Logic, Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics. There will be problem solving courses in each topic. The level of difficulty will correspond to the first/second year curriculum of B.Math. (hons) or B.Stat. (hons) program at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore/Kolkata. Each course will have a brief introductory lecture session on a focus area in one of the topics above and will be typically followed by 3 one and half hour problem solving sessions. The participants are expected to work together to solve the problem sheets that will be given out in these sessions.

Key dates: 07 May 2018 to 18 May 2018

Each day will also feature a popular science lecture by a distinguished speaker who is an expert in the corresponding area. The topics will range from across all sciences and the lecture will be made accessible to all the participants. Other daily events will include post dinner group sessions with resource persons and popular science speakers of the day.

In addition to the above there will be several short video talks that will be shown from aspiring to established women researchers in the areas of mathematical sciences. Further there will be opportunity to interact with many women scientists who will visit the program for short periods.
