Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Training and supervisory support
  • Access to Mercy Corps online tools
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this project to be undertaken

Intern responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Travel to and from Mercy Corps HQ
  • Laptop for working remotely
  • Accommodation, travel and living expenses
  • All other costs associated with this internship

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The National Committee on North Korea (NCNK), a project housed in the Washington, DC office of Mercy Corps, seeks a part- or full-time intern to provide research assistance; maintain the NCNK website; attend meetings on North Korea and regional affairs; and provide administrative support for the program.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  

Over the course of this internship, the intern will:

  • Gain a detailed understanding of U.S. policy toward North Korea.
  • Have opportunities to conduct in-depth research on specific policy issues.
  • Become familiar with new research tools and sources.

DELIVERABLES:

The Intern will support the team through the following activities:

  • Research and gather materials on North Korea.
  • Write or update NCNK Issue Briefs.
  • Attend congressional hearings, meetings, and seminars on North Korea and East Asia, and prepare oral and written presentations of content.
  • Maintain the NCNK website and update its events calendar on a weekly basis; help organize and transfer files and webpages for the pending website redevelopment.
  • Assist in the preparation and drafting of periodic reports and newsletters; proofread and edit publications.
  • Assist with planning and hosting NCNK events and activities.
  • Conduct fundraising-related research, as needed.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated interest in Northeast Asia.
  • Either a graduate student or a well-qualified undergraduate; relevant degree programs might include, but are not limited to, political science, history, or international relations.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Fluent in oral and written English.
  • Able to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work with a team.
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and efficient.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Korean is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Experience working with website content management systems is a plus.

The National Committee on North Korea is a non-partisan coalition of individuals with extensive and complementary knowledge of and direct experience related to the society, economy, government, and history of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. NCNK and its members support principled engagement between citizens of the U.S. and North Korea.

NCNK is an independent program of Mercy Corps, a global international development and relief agency, and NCNK staff are based within Mercy Corps’ Washington, DC office. Interns are encouraged to attend lectures, discussion sessions, and other events organized at or by Mercy Corps.
